A Haiku About Water

Bird in Gulf oil slickThe bird wants to live

The oil is dragging him down

I wonder if he will?

This is an older post I published back in February of this year.  It was a sketch I made and sold to help save the birds and animals from the devastation of a large oil spill.  The challenge was write a Haiku about water.

Open Letter to My Cat Merlin

Merlin my Muse
Merlin my Muse

This letter is to my cat of fifteen years, Merlin. He passed on six months ago and I
am still in mourning for him. I will probably always be. He had cancer
which I only found out the week before he died and he went fast. But while he was with me
I enjoyed every minute of our time together. He was always getting into some kind of mischief
and hiding and challenging me to find him. Then when I found him, he would jump out surprising
me every time. I never laughed so much at the things he would do. I know he wouldn’t be able to
read this letter but I know he will know how I feel about him.

Dear Merlin,

Thank you for our time together! I loved every minute of it, even though you were constantly
getting into something, including teasing your sister “Lady,” who I am sure misses you almost
as much as I do. Every day without you is just a little dimmer than when you were with us.
I know you are happy wherever you are and that I will see you again, when my turn comes.
So until then, I have Lady, who does her utmost to keep me happy.

Hope you are running around in the grass and trees, chasing mice and birds and being happy.
Until we meet again….

Merlin My Treasure, conclusion

Merlin and Lady started getting along soon after that.  Although Merlin never quite got over that Lady could sit on my lap with him and also get petted.  He had this look when he saw me petting her that said it all.  She, of course, was oblivious to his glares and would climb over him to get a better position on my lap.

On the other hand, Lady would cuddle up with Merlin when he was lying on the couch or chair and he seemed to like it.  He would groom her and even clean her ears which she loved.  And she would do the same for him.  So they became good buddies over the years.  I really loved their antics with each other.

Then a few years ago Merlin developed a Thyroid disease.  I had to put him on a special diet and take away the dental treats he loved but he got used to the diet even though I knew he wasn’t crazy about it.

He would wait outside the door when I was giving Lady her dental treats and then when she came out, he would rush in and lick the empty dish.  I really felt bad about that, but the vet said nothing except the food she recommended.  And it did help him stay healthy for a time.

When he was drinking water, Lady would come and insert herself between him and the water bowl and start drinking.  He would always sit back and let her do it.  When she was finished, he would continue drinking.

Merlin was always very nice to Lady but sometimes he would get a wild hair and chase her around the house.  Then she would give a cry and I would reprimand Merlin of course.  But I think she loved the chasing and playing even though he would get a little boisterous at times.  It was all a game to them.

We all had a great time together until recently when Merlin got very sick and was refusing to eat or drink.  After several trips to the vet, I knew he didn’t have much time left and it all happened so suddenly that it was a shock to me.  I tried to make him as comfortable as possible and I was glad I was with him when he died.  I  will always remember the good times we had together and I still have Lady to play with and spoil and to enjoy our time together, however long that may be.

Triumph Over Adversity

Finishing this class was a Triumph for me.  I really was getting into it and enjoying doing the going out and taking photos, etc.  But midway through the class my beloved cat, Merlin, got sick and after only a week passed away.  I did a few posts about him here with pictures.  I could not function for several days to do much of anything.  But then, I  slowly started doing the class again with the help of this little “Lady” my other cat.  She is a sister to Merlin and they got along great, mostly.  She is helping me immensely by being there when I need her, to talk to and pet whenever I miss Merlin too much.  She seems to understand what I am going through.

So my triumph was getting through this class, while at the same time the class helped me through a really painful time, which is not over yet.  But with Lady’s help and doing my blog and friends and family’s help, I will get through this.

Thanks for listening.

To Merlin

Merlin looking out
Merlin looking out the window

Merlin came into my life when just a tiny kitten

He was wild and adorable from the beginning

He would race around the house from window to window

Knocking down anything in his path whatsoever

I would find lamps down and bulbs smashed to bits

If it happened to get in his way

He would sit on the window sill and watch

All the birds in the bushes outside

He’d meet me at the door when I came home

And walk me to the door when I left

He was only fourteen when he left me

Too young to be gone but then

I am so thankful for the time we did have

And I know I will see him again.

Nature and Big

Mustang Acrylic Painting
This is an acrylic painting of Mustangs in the spring.  It is a huge painting.  The biggest one that I’ve ever done.  So since I can’t get out because I have a very sick cat, I have to take care of, I thought this would count as Big and Nature also.  Your feedback is welcome.  Thanks.

Connect The Dots

Merlin and Lady cuddling

These two, Merlin, the bigger one and Lady the tiny one with all the fur and the big tail, which you can’t see in this picture, are great buddies.  They do fight sometimes but nothing serious, just for something to do.  One or the other will start it and I just have to say, “Stop” in a stern voice and they go to their respective corners.

Merlin does like his privacy and he will get up and leave when Lady is practically on top of him to cuddle and or sleep.  He then will just get up and leave.  Most times though, they cuddle together like you see them in this picture.  They take over my recliner and then I have to find somewhere else to sit.

They are actually brother and sister but I had Merlin at eight weeks, right from the mother cat.  Lady had two other owners before I became her caregiver and Merlin was not happy after being the top cat for so long.  They were both three years when I acquired Lady.  She had some habits that were hard if not impossible to break but overall we have all gotten along very well.  Merlin is still jealous but he takes it with a grain of salt and he defers to Lady if she comes over and eats from his dish or drinks from his water bowl, when he is actually eating or drinking.

But all in all they do connect with each other and me and we are one big happy family.
