Photo In Light and Shadows

Merlin in shadow

I have been ill recently and not able to get outside to take any photos at different times of day and light.  So this is a picture of my cat, Merlin, who is now gone from me, but the photo is one in which the light and shadows are highlighted to create an interesting picture, I think.

The photo is for my Photo 101 Class.

Here are a few photos of my home and hometown.  I live within two blocks of the beach although lately I have not gotten there very often.

My cat Lady is a big part of my life and my home.  She is quite the little scamp.  And last is a photo of Main St. during a parade of which there are many.  At the drop of a hat, there is a parade in our small town.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

This is my offering for Photo 101, the word being “Home”.

A Day Like Any Other

It was a day like any other, a Sunday, only different because everyone was off work and it was quieter than usual out on the street.  Traffic noise was at a standstill, nothing was going on because a lot of people go to church or to brunch or just out for coffee at local coffee-shops.  I arose at my usual time and staggered to the kitchen to put on the tea kettle.  Can’t do much without my tea in the morning.  I usual have about three cups before the old brain waves kick in.

My favorite tea being green tea and now they have so many flavors of green tea, it is hard to pick one.  So every time I go to the store, I pick up a different flavor.  Sometimes its green tea with white tea added, which has a very smooth taste and I like it a bit better than the others.  Others have a fruity flavor added to the green, like mango or peach and then there’s green with jasmine.  It’s always a decision for me in the morning.  Sometimes I reserve the chamomile for the evening, it is so soothing.

After breakfast this morning I go to the computer and check out the news of the day, which of course is never good and sure enough there’s been another school shooting.  I don’t know why I even check the news at that time but it is pretty much in your face when you turn the computer on and I tell myself that I need to have a news free day at least once a week.

My family is usually busy with other things on the weekends, so it is just Lady and myself and she enjoys the extra lap time, while I write my morning notes.  My morning’s writings can be just anything that happened the day before or plans for the day or if I remember a dream I had, I try to jot more of it down and figure it out.  If I am really feeling creative I start a story, short or otherwise, maybe a poem.

By the time I am finished with the notes, it is usually time for lunch and today I am feeling very hungry.  On Sunday I sometimes have a muffin with cream cheese, one that I got at the Farmers Market on Saturday or a scone I got at the same place.  Mostly I buy veggies at the Market but a few local bakeries have stands there and are hard to resist.

When I am done with lunch, Lady usually gets on the bed on the pillows of course, in the sun and she’s off into dreamland for several hours.  Today I have elected to go for a walk downtown for some much-needed exercise.  So armed with sunscreen, a light jacket and a hat I take off.  I take a few dollars with me in case I see something I may like in the several thrift stores on the way.

It is really sunny when I get outside and the hat and sunglasses come in handy.  I go in a few thrift stores but do not find anything I like or need.  Oh well, next time, I tell myself.

About an hour later I find myself back in my apartment and ready for a nap myself.   So I find my book and lie down on the couch where after reading for a while, I fall asleep for at least an hour. When I wake up, it is time for dinner, so I fix myself a light salad and after I am finished it is time to watch a movie.  Time is sure flying by today, I think.  As I am just getting into the movie, the phone rings.  It is my daughter.

Her voice sounds funny and it dawns on me that she has been crying.

“What is it?” I ask.

“It’s Kay,”  she chokes.

“What’s the matter?”  I am really concerned now.

My mind races with all kinds of scenarios, Kay, my sister had just emailed me a few days before and everything was fine.

“She had a heart attack.”

“What,” I gasp.

“Kay had a heart attack and died.”

The Gift

My, he was a gift so fine

Even though I picked him out

Really, for myself one time

Loved him so but he had to leave

I miss him very much, you know

Now when I’m alone, the tears flow.

Our prompt for the day is: Gift
Our form for today is: Acrostic
Our device for today is: Simile

Think I have managed the acrostic and the prompt. I am happy with that.

Recreate a Single Day

On Writing 101 we were asked to recreate a single day for today’s Post. Sounds simpler than it is to do. But here goes.

After my cat, Lady greets me with a paw in the face, I struggle to get out of bed. Every morning is a struggle, the older I get, the more I struggle. The first thing is the bathroom where Lady directs me, in case I did not know the way. I do my business and splash water in my face and start to feel a little better. Maybe I will survive until I get to the kitchen, where I will put the kettle on for tea. Green tea of course. For the past few years, green tea has been my staple drink, for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is healthy for you.

There are so many different kinds of green tea out there, that I feel I have to get a new kind each time I go to the store. Pretty soon there won’t be enough room on the shelve for all the tea. There is green with white, green with jasmine, green with lemon and on and on. Once the water is boiled and the tea is steeped for the appropriate time, I make toast and put some almond butter and maybe a touch of orange marmalade on it. Sugarless of course as I am diabetic.

Most things I buy anymore are sugarless and there is a big selection. Not so in my mother’s day. They only had a few things you could find that were sugarless. You had to make your own whatever, if you wanted it; I sometimes made a sugarless cheesecake for my mother as she was diabetic also. Diabetes runs in our family and my grandmother, my mother, my sister and I all had/have it. Hopefully, it will not go any further and none of my daughters will get it.

After breakfast I sit down at the computer and the rest is history. I admit I waste time on the computer. I am guilty of reading several articles before I get down to the business of writing a Post. I need to limit my time on the computer because I have many other things I should be doing, like taking a walk, making the bed, taking a shower or even going for coffee. Lady tries to distract me by getting on my lap and it does interfere with my typing. She is a restless lap sitter, getting up and standing and moving around until I make her sit down or get down. After a bit of that, I will get up and start doing some of the things I have been putting off.

Been thinking of doing some painting again, another thing I have been procrastinating with. Always something else to distract me from getting out the paints and canvas. Pretty sure I will be painting soon because I usually get the urge around this time of year. Believe it or not I act on it then, in the Fall into Winter. The electricity in the air stimulates me and also the possibility of a rain storm. Maybe I will even finish that novel I’ve been working on for years. I can hear you all saying, “Un huh.”

After dinner, I usually end the day with a movie from Netflix and there is a big selection. When I pick one out, Lady and I settle in on my recliner to watch for a few hours, until it is time to toddle off to bed, book in hand. I drift off to sleep, looking forward to a new day…….

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream

In response to the prompt from The Daily Post to write an article on sleep, dreams, etc.

I used to have a problem getting to sleep.  I would read for a while because I like to read especially right before falling asleep.  Falling asleep seems to denote an activity like falling, whatever that means and what that means about sleeping.  Because we are usually lying down when we sleep either in bed or on the couch and sometimes on comfy chairs.

I would start out in bed with a book and sometimes with a few cookies and a glass of warm milk.  Then after about an hour or so, I would start to drift off into sleep.  I usually wake about three a.m. for a pee break, then either fall right back to sleep or toss and turn for a while and finally go to sleep for the night.

Then there were nights that nothing would work and I just could not get to sleep after my rituals of the book reading and the cookies and milk.  I would turn out the lights and lay there and then toss and turn for about an hour, then get up and go to the couch again with the book.  I’d read for a while and try to sleep again.  But sometimes even that didn’t work and I would get the book out again and read some more.  In the morning I would be exhausted from either no sleep at all or a few hours in between reading.  I read more books during that period.  At least I was getting something done, I thought.

Then there was the cat factor.  Usually my two cats were good, going to their respective places on the bed and not bothering me.  In fact, they were a comfort to me mostly but sometimes when I was just falling into a nice sleep, I would feel a paw on my face or in my hair.  Of course I woke right up and was not happy.  Fortunately, that did not happen too often but usually when there was a full moon, I could count on being awakened by one or both cats.

The last few years as my age advances, I seem to have no trouble getting to sleep at night even though I sometimes take a nap in the late afternoon.  I actually look forward to going to bed, reading for about an hour, again with the cookies and milk and drifting off to sleep.

Even more so, I look forward to the afternoon naps.  I actually savor the thought of lying down on the couch with the present book I am reading, which incidentally is mostly a murder mystery and sleeping like a baby with my cat Lady, lying either on top of me or somewhere in the immediate vicinity.  Whichever is more comfortable for her of course.

Triumph Over Adversity

Finishing this class was a Triumph for me.  I really was getting into it and enjoying doing the going out and taking photos, etc.  But midway through the class my beloved cat, Merlin, got sick and after only a week passed away.  I did a few posts about him here with pictures.  I could not function for several days to do much of anything.  But then, I  slowly started doing the class again with the help of this little “Lady” my other cat.  She is a sister to Merlin and they got along great, mostly.  She is helping me immensely by being there when I need her, to talk to and pet whenever I miss Merlin too much.  She seems to understand what I am going through.

So my triumph was getting through this class, while at the same time the class helped me through a really painful time, which is not over yet.  But with Lady’s help and doing my blog and friends and family’s help, I will get through this.

Thanks for listening.

My Treasure was and is my Cat, Merlin

Merlin was and still is my Treasure!   Even though he passed away on March 13, 2015 he is still here with me in my heart.  I wrote this poem for him on Feb. 6, 2015 before I knew he was so sick.

I picked him out of the litter

He seemed so easy going and

close to the Mother cat

When we got home, he was

a holy terror

Energy and activity personified

Knocking everything down that

was in his path

As he danced around the house

He jumped at feathers on a stick

and tried to get at birds through

the window

He’d run back and forth

from window to window

Watching people, birds and other

While he was small he sat on my

shoulder and back of chair

And tickled my ear with his

Many times he would curl up

in the crook of my arm on the couch

and when I moved

He would bite me

So many stories, so little time

He brought me happiness and I

loved him.
